Lee, Phils Pete Rose pick up crucial win over first-place Braves

There are plenty of reasons to think the Phillies will be sellers before the July 31 Trade Deadline.Cincinnati Reds 1976 Pete Rose Throwback Authentic Home White Jersey.

But if you are a glass-is-half-full Phillies fan, there is at least one reason for hope: Since the Braves started the season 12-1 they have played just one game better than the Phils. Simply put, they have not taken advantage of a gift-wrapped opportunity to run away with the National League East. If the wildly inconsistent Phillies can somehow get on a roll, they have a chance to make up ground and maybe make things interesting with 20 percent of their remaining games (15 of 75) against Atlanta.

“It means we have to play like hell,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.

The Phillies started the Montreal Expos Pete Rose Authentic Blue Throwback Cooperstown Jersey right way Friday night with a 5-4 victory over the Braves at Citizens Bank Park.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. declined to call this 10-game homestand “make or break” before the game, but he said it was “big” and indicated changes could be made with a poor finish before the All-Star break.

“We just want to win for the sake of winning,” Michael Young said. “There are a lot of guys here who’ve played well into Reds Merchandise October and we recognize there’s nothing like winning. And if you look at the crowd tonight, there’s nothing like winning in Philly. We’re all competitors and we want to win because of that. Having said that, we know the way things work. We recognize the end of the first half is coming. We want to start making a move.”

Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee pitched well through six before struggling in the seventh, but he should be in position to make the NL All-Star team. He allowed eight hits, four runs and struck out four in 6 1/3 innings to improve to 10-2 with a 2.73 ERA.

He gets one more start before the break. He understands the importance of the homestand.

“You’re playing the Braves, the Nationals, the teams that are ahead of you and they’re that much more important because you can gain ground there,” he said. “We just have to win games, and what the front office does and the decisions they have to make are up to them. It’s their job to do that and it’s our job to win games.”

The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the first against lefty Paul Maholm and never looked back. Chase Utley doubled, advanced to third on Jimmy Rollins’ infield single and scored on Freddie Freeman’s throwing error. Humberto Quintero hit a two-run home run to right field in the second for a 3-0 lead. A Braves fan interfered with the ball, but umpires used instant replay and ruled the ball had cleared the fence.

“I [have] faced this guy a long time,” Quintero said. “He always throws me away, so I tried to hit it the other way real good. When I touched first base, I knew the fan grabbed it and it was a homer.”

Ryan Howard, whose .503 OPS against left-handers entering the night ranked 194th out of 202 qualifying players this season, crushed a solo homer against Maholm into the Phillies bullpen in right-center field to take a 4-0 lead in the third.

It was Howard’s 11th homer and 43rd RBI of the season.

Quintero’s double to right-center field scored Delmon Young from first to make it 5-0 in the sixth.

Lee struggled mightily in the seventh. He hit Freeman with a pitch and allowed a single to Chris Johnson before Dan Uggla hit a three-run homer to make it a two-run game. Lee later allowed a Pete Rose Jersey one-out double to Brian McCann, who scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-4.

“He got really hot and he was spent,” Manuel said of Lee.

“It was hot, but I felt like I could continue to pitch,” Lee said.

The Braves remained impressed.

“Cliff pretty much made one mistake,” Uggla said.

J.C. Ramirez, Antonio Bastardo and Jonathan Papelbon pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to preserve the victory.

The Braves are 37-36 since their scintillating start. The Nationals are 36-36, while the Phillies are 36-37. Nobody in the Vintage 1976 Pete Rose Cincinnati Reds Mitchell and Ness Road Grey Throwback Jersey NL East is playing particularly well at the moment. That does not mean the Braves won’t get hot again. It just means the Phillies have a chance. They play the first seven games of their homestand against the Braves and Nationals.

The opportunity is there if they want it.

“Right now, I have a good feeling about our Pete Rose team,” Manuel said. “If we keep scoring runs and our pitching holds up, who knows what you can do? You don’t give up. You stay there and grind it out.”

Darvish halts Reds Custom Jersey for first victory since May

Yu Darvish won his first game in six weeks and the Rangers finished June with a .500 record, a significant accomplishment considered how they started out the month.

Darvish pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings and the Rangers were able to survive reliever Tanner Scheppers uncharacteristically erratic eighth inning for a 3-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Ballpark in Arlington.

The Rangers, who were 4-11 at one point in June, won 10 of their final 13 games to finish 15-15 for the month. That included taking two of three from the Reds, as Texas remains a half-game ahead of the Athletics in the American League West.

“It’s the best .500 month ever — to go from where we were and the stretch we knew we had in front of us, the teams we were playing on the road that are tough places to play and to be able to go in and win,” said closer Joe Nathan. “To be able to grind through and believe we can play better than we have, obviously, and win series against playoff-caliber teams down to the end speaks volume for this clubhouse. Guys knew not to give up and keep pressing on.”

Leonys Martin, still hitting at the bottom of the order, sparked the Rangers’ offense with two hits and two runs scored. He has now hit in 14 straight games, with 20 hits in his last 49 at-bats.

Darvish, who earned his first Reds Merchandise victory since May 16, allowed four hits and four walks while striking out eight. He threw 117 pitches and is now 8-3 with a 2.78 ERA and a league-leading 151 strikeouts on the season.

“As a starter, if the team doesn’t win on the Reds Customized Jersey day you pitch, it can be really frustrating,” Darvish said. “That was my thing.”

Darvish did win over Reds starter Mat Latos in a tight pitching duel that was scoreless until the Rangers broke through with two in the bottom of the fifth. Darvish made the lead stand up, and so did relievers Neal Cotts and Jason Frasor, who bailed Scheppers out during a tension-filled eighth inning when the Rangers’ 3-0 advantage appeared to be on the verge of getting wiped out.

Darvish won because of a much better fastball, which he threw 72 percent of the time over his 117 pitches.

“We wanted to be aggressive with his fastball, and that made his off-speed pitches better,” catcher Geovany Soto said. “His fastball was really great today. He used the fastball and moved it around a lot better.”

Darvish just needed a couple of runs, and he got them in the fifth. Engel Beltre led off the rally with a bunt single and went to third on a double by Martin. After Ian Kinsler struck out, Elvis Andrus dropped a squeeze bunt. Latos fielded it barehanded on the run and threw home trying to get Beltre. But the throw hit Beltre in the side of his face and rolled away from catcher Devin Mesoraco, allowing Martin to come around, as well.

“It was just a reaction,” Latos said. “It was bunted pretty hard and I thought I could make a play on it. I just kind of made a bad throw. I put Mesoraco in a pretty crappy situation to get hit like that. Looking back at it, I should have just held on to the ball.”

Beltre was momentarily stunned from getting hit but stayed in the game.

“It hit his ear, not his head,” manager Ron Washington said. “I told him it was still there. There weren’t any lacerations and there wasn’t any blood.”

The Rangers added another run in the seventh, as Martin led off with a single, stole second and scored on a one-out single by Nelson Cruz.

The Rangers needed the run. Scheppers took over in the eighth and quickly loaded the bases on a walk to Zack Cozart and singles by Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips. When Scheppers fell behind, 2-0, to Jay Bruce, Washington rushed Cotts into the game.

“It was just one of those days,” Scheppers said.

Cotts gave up sacrifice flies to Bruce and Chris Heisey. Frasor then took over and retired Todd Frazier on a fly to center to end the inning. Nathan, who has been successful on 11 straight save opportunities, then retired the side in order to end the game and the Rangers’ taxing month of June.

“We’re playing good baseball, that’s what we want to do,” Washington said. “We have a lot of ball left, so we have to keep grinding. The last few games against Cincinnati were tough, so we have to keep Custom Reds Jersey grinding. We’ve got to play the game just like that. If we do, the other stuff will fall into place.”

Joey Votto Los Rojos Jersey Billingsley is optimistic he will start April 2

Joey Votto Los Rojos Jersey Chad Billingsley said he was optimistic about starting the second game of the year for the Dodgers after throwing what he called a “normal” bullpen session on Monday, including seven curveballs.

Billingsley said his bruised right index finger passed that test and he was pleased with the quality of his pitches.

“I’m good. Everything felt fine,” Billingsley said. “The fingernail held up, no issues. It’s not really tender. I was a little surprised. It’s been a week and a half.”

Manager Don Mattingly indicated Billingsley would get the ball April 2 against the Giants, and not Hyun-Jin Ryu, but only if Billingsley has all of his weapons, including a curveball he hadn’t thrown since his last exhibition start on March 13.Joey Votto Alternate Red Los Rojos Jersey. Two days later while bunting in batting practice, a pitch pinned Billingsley’s index finger against the bat, just below the fingernail.

Joey Votto Jersey Billingsley has maintained his throwing regimen, even pitching 4 2/3 innings of a Minor League game on Saturday without curveballs because of the discomfort and chance that his fingernail would dislodge and put him on the disabled list.

Billingsley is in line to pitch somewhere on Thursday, when the Dodgers have split-squad games against the Angels in Anaheim and against their Class A team at Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. But if Billingsley pitches in either, it would prevent the Dodgers from back-dating his placement on the disabled list if necessary.

So he might just pitch a simulated game, at which time Mattingly said he would need to show he can throw curveballs to Major League hitters.

“It’s not only throwing them pain-free,” said Mattingly. “It’s also how they look. There’s a little concern. It could go either way.”

If Billingsley can’t start April 2, Ryu would. If Billingsley does start that game, Mattingly has indicated Ryu would be inserted into the rotation by April 13. 2013 Joey Votto Reds Jersey.

Jones Joey Votto Authentic Jersey drives in winner to take another Fenway series

But after watching Baltimore rally from a ninth-inning deficit Wednesday night, Thursday’s series-winning contest felt more like a carryover from that losing-streak stopper, a return to the kind of Orioles baseball that carried the club to a 93-69 record last year.

That it came in one-run fashion for the Orioles Joey Votto Authentic Jersey, who were previously 0-3 in one-run games after setting a Major League record with a 29-9 mark last year, was fitting. But the real source of solace as the Orioles got ready to board a plane to New York was the club’s improved play, with some timely hitting and lockdown relief pitching leading the way in Thursday’s 3-2 win against the Red Sox.

“They’re a good team and they’re totally different than what they were last year,” said closer Jim Johnson, who picked up his fourth save as part of 3 2/3 innings of stellar relief action to hand an improved Red Sox club its first series loss. “It’s going to be a dogfight all the way through. And we know that, and they know that. Anytime you can win a series and move on to the next city, you’re happy.”

The victory improved the Orioles to 5-4 and was their 11th out of their last 15 games against Boston, their 21st in the two clubs’ last 30 meetings, and gave them five consecutive series wins at Fenway Park. And it centered on the middle-of-the-order bats of Adam Jones and Chris Davis, who continue to drive the lineup and prove that perhaps the Orioles didn’t need to sign an external bat this winter after all.

“I’m glad what [Dan] Duquette and [Buck] Showalter did,” said Jones, who had a pair of key two-out RBIs, including the game winner. “They put it upon the in-house [guys]. They kept everything in-house. It’s made us get better. It’s made CD better, myself and [Matt] Wieters better. We don’t necessarily need the outside help. We’ve got the guys here.”

Davis continued a torrid streak to start the season, letting loose on Red Sox starter Alfredo Aceves’ 3-0 pitch in the second inning for his sixth homer of the year. The blast marked Davis’ 13th homer in his past 16 games, dating back to Sept. 26. In that stretch, Davis has homered in consecutive games, four in a row and six in a row, all different streaks. Meanwhile, Jones has hit safely in all nine games with six multi-hit contests. Combined, Davis and Jones have hit .441 with eight doubles, seven homers, 18 runs scored and 29 RBIs through the team’s first nine games. Joey Votto Replica Jersey.

“I don’t think our guys feel like one guy’s got to do it, and that’s a good mentality to have,” Showalter said. “Someone else is going to pick them up. I don’t think anyone feels like they’re carrying the load.”

The same can be said for the bullpen, a group that picked up the final 11 outs of the game after starter Chris Tillman’s exit and pieced together a stretch — dating back to Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s sixth-inning homer on Wednesday — in which they retired 14 straight Boston batters, ending with Shane Victorino’s seventh-inning single.

But all of the drama came in the bottom of the sixth inning, when lefty reliever Brian Matusz picked up the biggest two outs of the night.

“I think it set the tone for the rest of the inning,” Jones Joey Votto Authentic Jersey said, “the rest of the game.”

Tillman started the inning and allowed a leadoff single to Mike Napoli, and Daniel Nava’s hit one out later prompted Showalter to bring on Matusz. After falling behind, 3-0, on Saltalamacchia, Matusz bounced back, getting him to chase on a full-count slider. He followed that up by fanning Stephen Drew to strand the pair of runners.

“They had us in a good spot there if he doesn’t get Drew,” Showalter said. “We weren’t going to make multiple moves there in the sixth inning and [Jonny] Gomes was a good matchup for them. I turned to John [Russell] in the dugout and said, ‘If Brian gets this guy out, I think we’ve got a chance to win this game,’ because it really set up for us well the rest of the way.”

Matusz, a rotation candidate who made the Opening Day roster in the bullpen following phenomenal success there last year, has stranded all three inherited runners this season. And that’s following a season in which he recorded a 1.35 ERA in 18 relief outings, stranding all 14 inherited runners.Cheap Joey Votto Jersey.

“It was huge,” Matusz said of escaping Tillman’s trouble. “It was a crucial situation in the game right there. They had a little momentum going their way and to be able to stop it right there — and obviously our offense came back and scored a run for us — it was a crucial part and it was a nice way to end it.”

The Orioles’ offense responded in the next inning, with Jones — after evening the score at 2 with a two-out hit in the third — coming through again.

Manny Machado, who went 3-for-4, started it off with a single to end Clay Mortenson’s day and bring on Andrew Miller, who walked Nick Markakis. Former Oriole Koji Uehara entered to face Jones, who sent the first pitch into left field to double in the decisive run.

Joey Votto Cincinnati Reds Jersey.”He’s a good player,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Jones, who is batting .462. “Obviously, the RBI single up the middle to tie the game and then the double to put them ahead, that’s why he’s sitting in that three-hole for them.”

“I’m not trying to really turn and burn it, I’m trying to make solid contact and keep that in my concept,” Jones said. “Hit the ball and not necessarily try and hit the ball out of the park, just hit the ball hard and wherever it goes, live with the results.”

Tillman, who allowed a pair of runs in the third and took a no-decision in a 5 1/3-innings outing, wasn’t thrilled with his individual results.

“It was OK,” he said after allowing six hits and two walks along with five strikeouts. “Not where I need to be yet, but I was able to make some adjustments in-game and I was happy with that. But I’d like to get my work in in between starts and be able to start the game better.”

“He gave us a chance to win the game,” Showalter said. “Tilly had a couple deep counts where you’d like to see him kind of shorten up some, which would allow him to go a little deeper in the game, but he had the type of stuff that could have carried him a little deeper tonight. But it’s early. He’s strong and he carried a good fastball in both outings from the get-go. That’s good to see.”

A’s Joey Votto Authentic Jersey make it eight straight behind Griffin’s gem

After completing his career-high-tying eighth inning against the Angels on Thursday night, A.J. Griffin knew he was done.

The A’s Joey Votto Authentic Jersey right-hander was at 110 pitches in his second start of the season and his team was ahead by five at the time, so he didn’t hesitate asking the bullpen to finish the job.

“You don’t want to get too greedy in this game,” Griffin said.

Oh, no?

The A’s are wearing the look quite well these days, having taken home a Major League-leading 66 runs this season, including eight in an 8-1, series-sweeping victory over the Angels on Thursday night to extend their winning streak to eight.

Being greedy is outscoring your opponents by 41 runs (65-24) in that span — 13 Major League teams have yet to even score that many on the season — and picking up 16 hits for a second straight night to bring your season total to 103, most in the Majors. Joey Votto Replica Jersey.

At least 10 have come in each of their eight wins, marking just the second time in A’s history they’ve collected as many hits in as many consecutive games, the last time coming in August 2002.

Being greedy, it turns out, isn’t always a bad thing.

“We really just go out there to play one game at a time,” Griffin said. “We’ve been fortunate to put them together like this. It’s really cool to be a part of something so awesome with this group and have the type of success we’ve had so far.”

The eight consecutive wins mark the club’s longest winning streak in April since 1981, when the A’s won 11 straight. Six came on the road, and it’s just the third time in Oakland history that the A’s have gone undefeated on a road trip of six or more games.

“That’s pretty remarkable,” manager Bob Melvin said. “I don’t come up with those things, but I do hear about them from time to time. You go on the road and you hope to play over .500. You expect to win every game but to actually go 6-0 is terrific.”

Joey Votto Cincinnati Reds Jersey.

Particularly when three are played on the turf of the division-favorite Angels, who just so happen to be at the bottom of the division at 2-7, their second worst start in team history.

“Those guys are red-hot,” the Angels’ Mark Trumbo said. “I mean, they have six, seven guys that are swinging the bat well, and that’s a tough task to try to go up against. They definitely have all the momentum. We don’t have hardly any, and you just kind of have to wear it sometimes.”

Both teams managed just one run apiece through the first five innings, before Oakland broke open the game in the sixth with four runs.Cheap Joey Votto Jersey.

Josh Donaldson’s one-out, two-run homer off lefty Jason Vargas busted the tie, and Seth Smith, who finished with four hits, followed with a double. One out later, Vargas intentionally walked Coco Crisp as the Angels prepared to bring in righty reliever Kevin Jepsen to face Chris Young.

Young had just one hit in the series, yet the way his team’s rolling, it was no surprise when he laced a two-run double to left field to bring in another pair of runs.

The A’s Joey Votto Authentic Jersey  continued to bully the Angels’ bullpen in the seventh, with Yoenis Cespedes collecting his third home run of the season off lefty Sean Burnett, giving Oakland six runs for the eighth consecutive game. Just for fun, the A’s added two in the ninth.

“Any time you come in here, you know you have your work cut out for you,” Melvin said. “You have to focus on each game and play your best baseball and we did. Our offense has continued to flourish, and that takes some pressure off the rest of your game.

“But we really played a full game today, where the pitching was good, the defense was good, baserunning, clutch hitting, all of the above. This was probably our best game all the way around.”

By night’s end, Griffin had limited the Angels to one run on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

“Going through that lineup three or four times like he did, that’s pretty impressive,” Donaldson said. “I thought he did a fantastic job.

“They’re a good ball team over there but we came in here and had a mission and accomplished it.”

Greinke Joey Votto Authentic Jersey fractures collarbone in fracas at Petco

The Dodgers have lost right-hander Zack Greinke indefinitely with a broken collarbone as a result of a fight in the sixth inning of Thursday night’s 3-2 victory over the Padres at Petco Park.

Greinke hit Padres left fielder Carlos Quentin with a pitch and said he sustained the injury when Quentin body slammed him in the left shoulder as he charged the mound.Joey Votto Replica Jersey.

Stan Conte, vice president of medical services for the Dodgers, said he won’t know the duration of Greinke’s absence until after he is examined by team orthopedic physicians on Friday in Los Angeles. But one thing is certain: Dodgers manager Don Mattingly wants equal retribution.

“He should not play a game until Greinke can pitch,” Mattingly said about Quentin. “If he plays before Greinke pitches, something is wrong. Their guys charges the mound being an idiot and our guy is going to be out for however long and their guy is probably going to be playing in three days. It’s a joke.”

Greinke, who made his second start after signing a six-year, $147 million deal with the Dodgers in the offseason, left the clubhouse with his left arm in a sling. Plate umpire and crew chief Sam Holbrook will send a written report to Major League Baseball. Joe Garagiola Jr., MLB’s vice president of baseball operations, will view the videotape and determine suspensions under the rule restrictions governed by the Basic Agreement.

Greinke Joey Votto Authentic Jersey, Quentin, Matt Kemp and Jerry Hairston Jr. were all ejected from the game, Holbrook said.

Joey Votto Cincinnati Reds Jersey.

“Really, that’s all I can tell you,” Holbrook said afterward in a written statement. “I spoke with my supervisor and until we file a report with the league that’s really all we can say.”

There have been two previous incidents between the two players. In April 2009, when Greinke pitched for the Royals and Quentin was with the White Sox, Greinke hit Quentin in the back. Quentin had to be kept from charging the mound at the time, but ill feelings apparently still linger.

“It’s an unfortunate situation,” said Quentin, who was also hit in the wrist by Dodgers reliever Ronald Belisario during Tuesday’s home opener for the Padres. “Myself and Greinke have a history. It dates back a few years. You guys can look it up. It’s documented. It could have been avoided. You can ask Zack about that. For me, I’ve been hit by many pitches in my career. I think you guys know that. I can tell you I’ve never responded in that fashion, so you guys can do your homework on that. For me, the situation is done. That’s it.”

For his part, though, Greinke denied that he’s ever intentionally tried to hit Quentin. Regarding Thursday night’s situation, Quentin led off the sixth with the Dodgers leading, 2-1, and the count full when Greinke hit him in the left shoulder. Quentin started toward the mound, and when Greinke Joey Votto Authentic Jersey said something he ran full bore into him as the benches and bullpens cleared. In the melee, Quentin dumped Greinke to the ground, pulling off his jersey hockey style.

“The only thing I’m going to say about the whole thing that happened there is I’ve never hit him on purpose,” Greinke said. “I never thought of hitting him on purpose. He always seems to think that I’m hitting him on purpose, but, I mean, that’s not the case. “I actually thought it was just a ploy to get people to not throw inside to him. I just feel like he’s trying to intimidate people to throw away. But I don’t know anyone who has hit him on purpose. I know I haven’t. Like I said, I hadn’t even thought about hitting him on purpose before.”Cheap Joey Votto Jersey.

Mattingly wasn’t having any of it. Not the history and certainly not the results of the skirmish. With the Dodgers at 6-3 heading into a three-game weekend series against the D-backs at Chase Field beginning on Friday night, he’s going to have to revamp his starting rotation. Ted Lilly could be next up off the disabled list. He’s currently rehabbing from labrum surgery on his left shoulder.

“What happened? I don’t quite understand it, either,” Mattingly said. “Were in a 2-1 game and we’re trying to hit him on a 3-2 pitch to a guy that I see on the board set a record for the Padres by getting hit, a guy who basically dives into the plate? In a 2-1 game we’re trying to hit him 3-2? It’s just stupid is what it is.

“He caused the whole thing. Nothing happens if he goes to first base because in baseball that’s what you’re supposed to do. We weren’t throwing at him in that situation. That’s zero understanding of the game of baseball. He shouldn’t play a game until Greinke can pitch. Not one person on their team thinks he was throwing at him. We’re trying to win a game. You don’t hit a guy there. It’s stupid. Just ridiculous.”

Old tensions rise as Greinke Joey Votto Authentic Jersey, Quentin set off melee

As far as he can remember, Padres left fielder Carlos Quentin had never rushed the mound in a big league game, even though he had been hit 115 times with a pitch heading into Thursday’s game against the Dodgers at Petco Park.

“I’ve never reacted that way,” he said.

But No. 116 resonated much deeper with Quentin Joey Votto Authentic Jersey, who was plunked on the left arm with a pitch in the sixth inning by Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke, a pitcher with whom he has a history.

That set off two incidents that ended with much more than hurt feelings on either side, as Greinke suffered a broken left collarbone in the scrum near the mound.

Four players were ejected  — Quentin, Greinke, Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp and infielder Jerry Hairston Jr. The Dodgers went on to win the game, 3-2.

“It’s unfortunate about the situation,” Quentin said. “But it could have been avoided.”

With the Dodgers leading 2-1, Greinke ran the count full on Quentin before hitting him with a fastball in the upper part of his left arm. Quentin took a few steps toward the mound and then charged, he said, after Greinke apparently said something to him.

This marked the third time Quentin has been hit by a Greinke pitch in his career, but the first time since 2009.

Quentin and Greinke collided hard and the two initially bounced off each other, with Greinke — who, at a listed 195 pounds, is 45 pounds lighter than Quentin — absorbing the biggest blow before players from each team joined in the scrum.

“That was the final straw,” Quentin said of Greinke’s words. “Look at his body language and look at the video. It’s clear as day.”

Afterward, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly was not only upset about the Greinke injury but why the incident occurred in the first place.

“Were in a 2-1 game and on a 3-2 pitch  to a guy that I see on the board set a record for the Padres by getting hit, a guy who basically dives into the plate,” Mattingly said. “In a 2-1 game we’re trying to hit him 3-2? It’s just stupid is what it is. He should not play a game until Greinke can pitch.

“If he plays before Greinke pitches, something is wrong.”

As it stands, Quentin could be facing a suspension or fine while the Dodgers will be without Greinke for an indefinite period of time.

“The process will take place. I guess [the Commissioner’s Office in New York] will figure it out if there’s any suspension,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “I suspect something, a fine … I’m not sure. I think there’s a protocol in place for this.”

Quentin Joey Votto Authentic Jersey was also hit on the right wrist in Tuesday’s game against the Dodgers and didn’t play Wednesday because of it. He returned to the starting lineup Thursday.

“Myself and Greinke have a history. It dates back a few years. It’s documented,” Quentin said. “There is a reason I reacted the way I did.”

Quentin went into the game having been hit by pitches twice in his career by Greinke. Both occurred in the American League when Quentin played for the White Sox and Greinke pitched for the Royals. The first hit-by-pitch occurred in July 2008, the second in April 2009.Cheap Joey Votto Jersey.

In that 2009 game, Quentin was brushed back by a pitch that, according to reports, came close to hitting him in the head. Later in the game, Greinke hit him squarely in the back with a pitch.

“I’ve never hit him on purpose,” Greinke said. “I never thought of hitting him on purpose. He always seems to think that I’m hitting him on purpose, but, I mean, that’s not the case.

“I actually thought it was just a ploy to get people to not throw inside to him. I just feel like he’s trying to intimidate people to throw away. But I don’t know anyone who has hit him on purpose.”Joey Votto Cincinnati Reds Jersey.

Quentin has a long history of getting hit by pitches. While with the White Sox in 2011, he led the league when he was hit 23 times. Last season with the Padres, he led the National League with 17.

Quentin was asked if he expects any repercussions from Thursday’s incident. After all, the Padres face the Dodgers 16 more times this season, including a game Monday at Dodger Stadium in the opener of a three-game series.

“We’ll see what happens. Obviously they’re not happy losing one of their starting pitchers,” Quentin said. “That’s unfortunate for their organization. Like I said, this didn’t start off as just two teams out on this field. There was a history there.”

Quentin and Kemp had to be separated in the area of the ballpark that leads to the Padres garage, as Padres pitcher Clayton Richard and ballpark security intervened.

“It’s part of the game, it’s happened for 100 years,” said Padres pitcher Jason Marquis, who started the game. “It’s unfortunate guys get hurt. I’m going to protect my teammates in any which way. But you don’t want to see guys hurt in that situation. You don’t wish injury on anyone.”

LA irate after melee in win leaves Greinke Joey Votto Authentic Jersey hurt

The Dodgers’ fury over Zack Greinke’s broken left collarbone, ignited by Carlos Quentin charging the mound in the sixth inning Thursday night, overshadowed Juan Uribe’s pinch-homer that gave Los Angeles a 3-2 win over the Padres.

It simmered throughout the postgame comments and spilled into the service tunnel as the Dodgers were about to walk through the Padres players’ parking lot to board their buses for the airport an hour after this strange and volatile game ended.

In the tunnel is where Matt Kemp and Quentin met in a tense, face-to-face confrontation, Kemp asking Quentin why he’d charge the mound, Quentin saying his head was thrown at. Quentin started pointing, Kemp warned Quentin to stop and at that point the pair was separated by teammates and friends. Hanley Ramirez first intervened, then Clayton Kershaw grabbed Kemp from going back for more, while Clayton Richard was backing up Quentin.

Meanwhile, Greinke Joey Votto Authentic Jersey wasn’t going to Arizona with the team. Instead, he returned to Los Angeles for a morning exam by Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Greinke, his left arm in a sling, wouldn’t give a prognosis or an indication of the severity of the injury, which can take anywhere from two weeks to three months to heal and on rare occasion requires surgery.

So, the physical will be known on Friday. The emotional wounds will be tested next week, as the Padres come to Dodger Stadium for a three-game series starting Monday night.

Is there bad blood between these two teams?

“Now there probably is,” said Greinke. “I don’t know if there was before.”

There really isn’t bad blood between the teams. There’s definitely bad blood between the Dodgers and Quentin for sidelining their $147 million co-ace, as A.J. Ellis pointed out, for no good baseball reason. And there’s bad blood between the Dodgers and Padres reserve John Baker, whom they accused of reveling in the pain Quentin’s bull rush put on Greinke’s fractured clavicle.

“I hear he went to Stanford,” Kemp said of Quentin. “People with good baseball IQs, with a one-run lead in the sixth inning and a 3-2 pitch. Joey Votto Replica Jersey.I’ve heard smart people go to Stanford, but that wasn’t too smart.”

Kemp, Greinke and Jerry Hairston Jr. were ejected for their parts in the melee. During the brawl, Kemp went face to face with umpire Paul Nauert, later saying when he heard Padres players ridiculing Greinke, he “went over the edge.”

“That stuff happens in the Minor Leagues,” Kemp said of Quentin’s actions, “not the big leagues.”

Ellis said even during the brawl, Padres players were apologizing for the breach of the baseball code that Quentin showed when he attacked Greinke in a situation nobody else believed was intentional except for Quentin, who four years ago was intercepted from going after Greinke by the plate umpire and opposing catcher when hit in the back with a 2-2 pitch.

“I had a similar thing happen in A-ball — bases loaded, 3-2 pitch, guy got hit — and the entire team apologized to me and that’s what their guys did tonight, to a man, apologizing for what just happened,” said Ellis. “We knew during the game what was up with Zack. They were upset as well. We all know the code of baseball.”

The Dodgers were nearly as baffled when they heard that Greinke not only was ejected, but that crew chief and plate umpire Sam Holbrook would only confirm the ejections but not explain why to a pool reporter afterward. It did appear that Greinke said something to encourage Quentin just before he headed for the mound.

“I spoke with my supervisor and until we file a report with the league, that’s really all we can say,” said Holbrook. “I can’t tell you what was said or what we think led to it.”

Quentin confirmed Greinke said something to him. Joey Votto Cincinnati Reds Jersey.

“That was the final straw,” Quentin Joey Votto Authentic Jersey  said. “That could have been avoided as well.

“But like I said, there’s a history there. There’s a reason why I reacted the way I did. Who knows what happens if he doesn’t say anything. Or if he motions that it wasn’t intentional.”

Of all the Dodgers that were angry, nobody seemed hotter than Hairston, a former Padre, who billed himself as a peacemaker in the opening round of the brawl. But after order appeared to be restored, he came sprinting out of his dugout pointing a finger at a player on the San Diego bench he wouldn’t name. Manager Don Mattingly, however, said it was Baker.

Cheap Joey Votto Jersey. “Obviously Zack was hurt and one guy over there was chirping, making fun of him,” said Hairston. “I asked him to meet me halfway. He didn’t. That never should have happened. Zack’s not trying to put the tying run on base.

“Now we’re trying to win and one of our aces has a broken collarbone. It’s unacceptable. I lost it. I know Zack, we talked in the offseason, we have the same agent. I knew he’d be huge for us, hasn’t given up a run all year. And their guy is making fun of a broken collarbone? I took exception to that. You don’t make fun of a guy that’s injured.”

Nats recover from slow start to back Zimmermann Aroldis Chapman Authentic Jersey

The umpires were late. The bats were quiet. And through three innings on Wednesday night, the Nationals had only one hit.

But starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann Aroldis Chapman Authentic Jersey was never worried.

“These guys,” he said, “they’re going to score some runs sooner or later.”

That’s what happened against the White Sox. Bryce Harper homered — again — to lead off the fourth inning and spark a nine-hit, five-run spree over the next three frames. That push — fueled by Harper, Ian Desmond and Danny Espinosa — gave Washington its second win in as many nights against the White Sox, 5-2, before a crowd of 24,586 at Nationals Park.

“It’s easy to take the mound when you’ve got the lineup we have, and team’s are going to have a hard time shutting them down all game,” Zimmermann said. “When they score runs like that, it’s a lot easier to pitch.”

Zimmermann used his fastball effectively to strike out four over seven innings. He allowed just two earned runs on seven hits and threw 90 pitches, showing the efficiency the Nationals look for and expect out of their No. 3 starter.

“It starts with Jordan,” said Desmond, who finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple. “He was working quick, getting quick outs, getting us back in the dugout, and the other guys around me were hitting, too.” Aroldis Chapman Jersey Replica Jersey.

Everybody knows about the power at the heart of the Nationals’ lineup with Adam LaRoche and Harper, who had his seventh multi-hit performance in eight games and his team-leading fourth home run of the season. But what may surprise — and scare — some teams is just how deep Washington’s lineup really is.

On Wednesday night, it was the sixth, seventh and eighth spots in the order that did the damage. Desmond had three hits, and six of his past seven have now gone for extra-bases. Espinosa had a single and a double and drove in two runs. And Kurt Suzuki got on base three times, all walks.

Aroldis Chapman Cincinnati Reds Jersey.”All the way up and down,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “They’re good up and down the lineup. Those guys in the middle are tough at-bats. They play good defense and they have some speed. You look at those first four, and they’re names you know, but the rest of that lineup is pretty solid.”

The pitching has proven to be pretty solid, too. Zimmermann Aroldis Chapman Authentic Jersey cruised through seven innings, but Johnson opted to lift him in favor of Drew Storen in the eighth. The Nationals skipper said that, at this point in the season, seven innings of two-run baseball is more than enough. Zimmermann has not lost a start at home since May 17, 2012.

The Nationals matched Zimmermann’s stellar pitching with a stellar offensive effort. Harper’s home run, which landed in the second deck of the right field seats, just above the bullpen, and Desmond’s three extra-base hits were the highlights, but all of the starters contributed in one way or another. Every batter except Zimmermann and pinch-hitter Tyler Moore reached base for the Nats.

“It wasn’t like I was the only one,” Desmond said. “Hitting barrels is contagious, and a lot of guys are finding the barrel right now.”Cheap Aroldis Chapman Jersey.

The game’s first pitch was delayed by 15 minutes because the umpires got caught in traffic and “it delayed their preparation for the game.” But the late start didn’t prevent the Nationals from improving to 5-0 at home this season.

“It didn’t seem to bother Zim too much,” Johnson said with a smile. “He pitched a great ball game.”
